The first people to cultivate and use Cacao beans were the Mayans. They called the beverage they made from ground Cacao Beans “Xocoatl,” meaning “bitter water”. This drink was a mixture of Cacao beans, water and spices such as chili and vanilla. In later years the Aztecs used Cacao Beans as currency: 100 beans could be exchanged for one turkey. The Aztec emperor Montezuma II consumed dozens of cups of Xocoatl every day believing that it gave him strength and wisdom.
Despite the rise of today's chocolate products, raw Cacao Beans have started to gain ground again: They are the purest and most natural form of Cacao.
